PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Upswept Skinning Knife is built around a trailing point blade profile that puts the cutting edge exactly where skinning work needs it. The spine curves upward toward the tip, which drops the belly lower and gives the edge more surface contact during long, smooth strokes through hide. It's a shape that serious hunters reach for specifically because it reduces the effort behind each pass and keeps the tip clear of internal organs during field dressing work.
Wood-grain Damascus runs horizontally across the blade in flowing lines, shifting in contrast as the light angle changes. The split handle pairs olive wood on the upper section with red pakka wood on the lower, joined by a single brass pin that locks both materials to the full tang blade. The two tones work well together — the honey warmth of the olive wood against the deep red of the pakka wood gives the handle a natural, layered look without relying on resin or synthetic color. A dark brown leather sheath with snap button closures ships with the knife, fitted for belt carry.
At 6-7 inches overall, this knife sits in a practical size range for field use — long enough to handle larger game without feeling unwieldy for smaller detail work.
Upswept Skinning Knife at JW Steel Crafts, combining a wood-grain Damascus trailing point blade with a split olive wood and red pakka wood handle.
The History Behind This Blade
Trailing point Skinner blades were developed by hunters who needed a blade that maximized cutting edge contact during hide removal. Wood-grain Damascus forging dates back centuries, valued for the layered strength and flowing pattern left by repeated folding. Split wood handles became popular in custom knife making for pairing two complementary materials in one grip. JW Steel Crafts forges this blade by hand, keeping the upswept profile true to its skinning roots.
Blade Performance
Wood-grain Damascus steel holds a sharp edge through repeated field and skinning use. The trailing point profile keeps the belly low and in full contact during long skinning strokes. Full tang construction keeps the knife balanced and steady throughout extended field dressing sessions. The upswept tip stays clear of internal organs during field dressing, reducing contamination risk. As high-carbon steel, the blade benefits from regular oiling to stay rust-free after field use.
Handle Construction
Olive wood covers the upper section of the handle in a honey-toned, smooth grain. Red pakka wood fills the lower section in a deep, rich tone that darkens toward the base. A brass pin secures both sections to the full tang blade, keeping the split construction tight under repeated use. Pakka wood resists moisture better than untreated wood, and the olive wood section stays stable with basic care. Full tang construction runs the entire length of both handle sections for strength and balance.
Best Used For
This knife is built for hunters who field dress deer, elk, and similar game regularly. The trailing point profile makes hide removal faster and cleaner than a standard drop point blade. Outdoorsmen who skin regularly will get the most consistent results from the upswept belly on longer animals. Collectors appreciate the split handle material combination as much as the blade shape itself. As a gift, it suits any hunter looking for a dedicated skinning knife with quality Damascus steel and natural handle materials.

I'm very pleased with this tent after having it for two years I've been in the rain I've been in the snow and it's held up pretty good but the cover that covers it did not hold up that good but the tent is perfect
Really enjoy the awning. Easy setup and got a little rain on the first trip. Easy to adjust for the run off. Very happy with the purchase!
I am one of the earliest customers Astrodome, I bought it and didn’t set it up for almost a year. By the time we set it up, we were blown away by the beauty of this space we purchased it on a mountain ledge in our glamping retreat in Lake County California two hours north of San as much as I love this space there are definitely some challenges with it in our location. It might work better than other locations, but we have had problems with the stakes, slipping and collapsing in the ground beneath and with the prevailing winds, it did stay up and it stays dry, even in tornadoes, but because the wind hits it from One Direction coming from the coast, this is definitely been a challenge for us we are going to try adding some weight inside it. The guests absolutely love this space keep in mind that with those skylights it’s going to get hot in the summertime but what’s nice is in the winter. It heats up almost passive solar. it’s also wonderful with a woodstove. A very cost effective alternative to a geodesic dome! If you want to experience it stay in ours, on Hipcamp.
I bought one of these at Scheels and absolutely love it. Great design, has everything you would ever need in a first aid/trauma/survival kit. Have one in all of my vehicles now. These guys truly thought of everything
A complete coverage of possibilities for my project and needs.
I love my new tent stove. Costumer service was also attentive and great to work with. Thank you.
The mounts work perfect with the truck bed rack I have on. Thank you for the excellent line of communication. You guys never kept me in the dark. I will ordering from you guys again.
I was wondering if you are able to sell just two extra mounts or do they just come in a set of six.
The color was even better in person. For well, looks well made and was easy to fold up and put into the carrying case. There was a bunch of colored plastic pieces from manufacturing on the mat, but I was able to vacuum it right up so be careful pulling it out.
Although it took a little extra time the delay very of my OVS Truck Topper was great. Good price too!
Fully engaged with customer, helped me get the crossbar I needed on time!
Product worked out great for my rack setup.
Order was delayed due to manufacturer delays, but my questions were answered and expectations on timing reset along the way. Cross bars were in perfect condition and work great!
I was in the market for a 3/4 length roof rack for my 4Runner as I wanted an upgrade from the OEM rails but still wanted to retain a somewhat OEM look. I am very happy that I went with the Sherpa Needle. It is a high quality rack with the best install method out of all the racks I looked at. I like that it is designed so you don’t have to deal with a mess of silicone when mounting. It is also nice that the fairing sits just above the roof instead of resting on it so that the paint does not get scratched. I was worried about wind noise because of this but I am happy to say there is no added wind noise at all.
I am also glad I purchased this rack through Live More Outside. I shopped around and they had the best pricing considering I was able to get a discount code, shipping was free, and they don’t charge sales tax. Shipping was prompt and I received the rack sooner than I thought I would.
Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and I will definitely come back to Live More Outside as I continue to build my rig.
By far one of the best customer service! Nathan has been a huge help on any questions and quick to respond! Live more outside is top notch. We are getting ready to hit our first outing with our new RTT. Cant wait to test it out. We also just purchased a 270 awning. I found one on another website but wanted to keep my business with live more outside. Nathan price matched and beat their price! We will continue to keep our business with this company!
