PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This Norse bearded axe pair gives you two matched Viking-style wood-cutting tools forged from Damascus steel. Each axe head carries a bearded profile with a 6-8 inch cutting edge and a grey etched Damascus finish. Floral-scroll engraving runs across the cheek of each head. Ash wood handles run 18-20 inches on each axe with a natural straight grain finish. Sold as a pair of two. No cover included.
This is the only Norse bearded axe pair at JW Steel Crafts built as Viking-style wood-cutting tools with Damascus heads and ash wood handles in this configuration.
The History Behind This Head
Norse bearded axes were the primary wood-cutting and camp tool carried by Viking Age Scandinavian woodsmen and settlers from the 8th century onward long before they became associated with combat. The bearded profile, with its extended lower cutting edge dropping below the eye, gave woodsmen a longer cutting arc per swing and a hook edge for controlled log splitting, branch clearing, and timber shaping without a full-size felling axe.
Ash wood was the universal handle material across the Norse tool tradition: lightweight, straight-grained, and shock-absorbent enough to withstand thousands of hard chopping strikes without splitting the handle. The JW Steel Crafts Norse bearded axe pair carries that same working woodsman tradition in every forged head.
Head Performance
Each axe head is forged from layered Damascus steel with a grey etched finish and a sharpened working edge. The bearded profile extends the lower cutting edge below the eye line — giving a longer cutting arc per swing than a standard axe head of the same weight and allowing log hook-and-pull control that a straight-bottom head cannot perform during timber shaping and branch work. Damascus steel builds consistent edge retention through repeated hard chopping use and resharpens cleanly on a whetstone without losing the cutting geometry. The floral-scroll engraving on each cheek gives the working tool a bold Norse visual identity without adding weight or changing the cutting balance.
Handle Construction
Each handle is shaped from natural ash wood running 18-20 inches in length. Ash is the traditional Norse axe handle material — straight-grained, naturally shock-absorbent, and light enough for sustained one-handed chopping without wrist fatigue. The straight grain runs the full handle length, giving consistent flex and vibration dampening on every hard chopping strike. The natural finish keeps the ash surface at full density without coatings that reduce grip feel during outdoor wood cutting work in wet or cold conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes this axe pair different from other tools at JW Steel Crafts?
Only Norse bearded axe pair in the store built as Viking-style wood-cutting tools with Damascus heads and ash wood handles in this configuration.
What is a bearded axe profile?
The lower cutting edge extends below the eye in a downward curve longer cutting arc per swing and hook control for log splitting and timber shaping work.
Why ash wood for the handles?
Ash is straight-grained and shock-absorbent — it dampens hard chopping vibration and resists splitting under repeated outdoor wood cutting use better than most hardwoods.
What is the engraving on each head?
Floral-scroll pattern pressed into the Damascus cheek during finishing gives each working tool a bold Norse visual identity without affecting cutting balance or weight.
Is a cover included?
No cover is included with this pair.
Is this pair suitable as a gift?
Yes. Matched Damascus engraved heads, ash wood handles, and Norse bearded profile make this a strong gift for campers, woodsmen, and Viking history enthusiasts.
How do I care for these axes?
Wipe the head clean and dry after use. Apply light mineral oil to the Damascus head occasionally. Condition the ash handle with linseed oil every few months to prevent drying.

I'm very pleased with this tent after having it for two years I've been in the rain I've been in the snow and it's held up pretty good but the cover that covers it did not hold up that good but the tent is perfect
Really enjoy the awning. Easy setup and got a little rain on the first trip. Easy to adjust for the run off. Very happy with the purchase!
I am one of the earliest customers Astrodome, I bought it and didn’t set it up for almost a year. By the time we set it up, we were blown away by the beauty of this space we purchased it on a mountain ledge in our glamping retreat in Lake County California two hours north of San as much as I love this space there are definitely some challenges with it in our location. It might work better than other locations, but we have had problems with the stakes, slipping and collapsing in the ground beneath and with the prevailing winds, it did stay up and it stays dry, even in tornadoes, but because the wind hits it from One Direction coming from the coast, this is definitely been a challenge for us we are going to try adding some weight inside it. The guests absolutely love this space keep in mind that with those skylights it’s going to get hot in the summertime but what’s nice is in the winter. It heats up almost passive solar. it’s also wonderful with a woodstove. A very cost effective alternative to a geodesic dome! If you want to experience it stay in ours, on Hipcamp.
I bought one of these at Scheels and absolutely love it. Great design, has everything you would ever need in a first aid/trauma/survival kit. Have one in all of my vehicles now. These guys truly thought of everything
A complete coverage of possibilities for my project and needs.
I love my new tent stove. Costumer service was also attentive and great to work with. Thank you.
The mounts work perfect with the truck bed rack I have on. Thank you for the excellent line of communication. You guys never kept me in the dark. I will ordering from you guys again.
I was wondering if you are able to sell just two extra mounts or do they just come in a set of six.
The color was even better in person. For well, looks well made and was easy to fold up and put into the carrying case. There was a bunch of colored plastic pieces from manufacturing on the mat, but I was able to vacuum it right up so be careful pulling it out.
Although it took a little extra time the delay very of my OVS Truck Topper was great. Good price too!
Fully engaged with customer, helped me get the crossbar I needed on time!
Product worked out great for my rack setup.
Order was delayed due to manufacturer delays, but my questions were answered and expectations on timing reset along the way. Cross bars were in perfect condition and work great!
I was in the market for a 3/4 length roof rack for my 4Runner as I wanted an upgrade from the OEM rails but still wanted to retain a somewhat OEM look. I am very happy that I went with the Sherpa Needle. It is a high quality rack with the best install method out of all the racks I looked at. I like that it is designed so you don’t have to deal with a mess of silicone when mounting. It is also nice that the fairing sits just above the roof instead of resting on it so that the paint does not get scratched. I was worried about wind noise because of this but I am happy to say there is no added wind noise at all.
I am also glad I purchased this rack through Live More Outside. I shopped around and they had the best pricing considering I was able to get a discount code, shipping was free, and they don’t charge sales tax. Shipping was prompt and I received the rack sooner than I thought I would.
Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and I will definitely come back to Live More Outside as I continue to build my rig.
By far one of the best customer service! Nathan has been a huge help on any questions and quick to respond! Live more outside is top notch. We are getting ready to hit our first outing with our new RTT. Cant wait to test it out. We also just purchased a 270 awning. I found one on another website but wanted to keep my business with live more outside. Nathan price matched and beat their price! We will continue to keep our business with this company!
