PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Finger-Hole Skinning Knife changes how your hand connects to the blade during close fieldwork. That circular opening in the steel isn't decorative — it lets you slip a finger through for a choked-up grip that puts your hand closer to the work. For skinning, where control matters more than reach, that shift in grip changes everything. Rasp steel makes up the blade, carrying the original tooth pattern from the horseshoeing file it was forged from. That texture runs across the spine, giving the steel a natural non-slip surface while the cutting edge stays clean and sharp below it.
The blade sits on a compact skinner profile with a slightly curved belly, well-suited for controlled, sweeping cuts without the tip catching where it shouldn't. Blue pakka wood makes up the handle, swirling in light and dark tones that shift across the grain of the material. Two polished pins run through the full tang construction beneath, keeping the scales locked in place through heavy use. The knife ships in a basketweave-stamped leather pancake sheath built for horizontal belt carry, sitting flat and out of the way when not in use.
Finger-Hole Skinning Knife at JW Steel Crafts with a rasp steel blade, blue pakka wood handle, and basketweave leather pancake sheath.
The History Behind This Blade
Finger-hole skinner blades trace their roots to hunters who needed more control during field dressing without sacrificing blade length. Rasp steel comes from reclaimed farrier files, prized for toughness and edge retention once reforged. Pakka wood handles became popular for their moisture resistance and bold color. JW Steel Crafts forges this blade by hand, keeping the finger hole as a functional grip feature, not just a visual detail.
Blade Performance
Rasp steel holds a sharp edge through repeated field and outdoor use. The finger hole shifts your grip forward, putting your hand closer to the cut for better control. Full tang construction keeps the knife balanced and steady during skinning and detail work. The rasp texture along the spine adds grip without affecting the cutting edge below. As high-carbon steel, the blade benefits from a wipe-down and light oil after each use.
Handle Construction
Blue pakka wood covers the handle in swirling light and dark tones that vary across the grain. Two polished pins run through the handle, locking the scales firmly to the full tang blade beneath. This construction holds up well under repeated field handling and harsh outdoor conditions. Pakka wood resists moisture better than untreated wood, making it a practical choice for hunting use. The full-tang build keeps the knife balanced from the blade tip to the handle butt.
Best Used For
This knife is built for hunters who want more grip control during skinning and field dressing. The finger hole suits close, detailed work where a standard grip starts to lose precision. It also handles general outdoor cutting tasks well, from trimming rope to light campsite work. Collectors are drawn to the raspy steel texture and bold blue pakka wood in equal measure. As a gift, it suits hunters, outdoorsmen, or anyone who appreciates a grip-forward knife with a real working history.

I'm very pleased with this tent after having it for two years I've been in the rain I've been in the snow and it's held up pretty good but the cover that covers it did not hold up that good but the tent is perfect
Really enjoy the awning. Easy setup and got a little rain on the first trip. Easy to adjust for the run off. Very happy with the purchase!
I am one of the earliest customers Astrodome, I bought it and didn’t set it up for almost a year. By the time we set it up, we were blown away by the beauty of this space we purchased it on a mountain ledge in our glamping retreat in Lake County California two hours north of San as much as I love this space there are definitely some challenges with it in our location. It might work better than other locations, but we have had problems with the stakes, slipping and collapsing in the ground beneath and with the prevailing winds, it did stay up and it stays dry, even in tornadoes, but because the wind hits it from One Direction coming from the coast, this is definitely been a challenge for us we are going to try adding some weight inside it. The guests absolutely love this space keep in mind that with those skylights it’s going to get hot in the summertime but what’s nice is in the winter. It heats up almost passive solar. it’s also wonderful with a woodstove. A very cost effective alternative to a geodesic dome! If you want to experience it stay in ours, on Hipcamp.
I bought one of these at Scheels and absolutely love it. Great design, has everything you would ever need in a first aid/trauma/survival kit. Have one in all of my vehicles now. These guys truly thought of everything
A complete coverage of possibilities for my project and needs.
I love my new tent stove. Costumer service was also attentive and great to work with. Thank you.
The mounts work perfect with the truck bed rack I have on. Thank you for the excellent line of communication. You guys never kept me in the dark. I will ordering from you guys again.
I was wondering if you are able to sell just two extra mounts or do they just come in a set of six.
The color was even better in person. For well, looks well made and was easy to fold up and put into the carrying case. There was a bunch of colored plastic pieces from manufacturing on the mat, but I was able to vacuum it right up so be careful pulling it out.
Although it took a little extra time the delay very of my OVS Truck Topper was great. Good price too!
Fully engaged with customer, helped me get the crossbar I needed on time!
Product worked out great for my rack setup.
Order was delayed due to manufacturer delays, but my questions were answered and expectations on timing reset along the way. Cross bars were in perfect condition and work great!
I was in the market for a 3/4 length roof rack for my 4Runner as I wanted an upgrade from the OEM rails but still wanted to retain a somewhat OEM look. I am very happy that I went with the Sherpa Needle. It is a high quality rack with the best install method out of all the racks I looked at. I like that it is designed so you don’t have to deal with a mess of silicone when mounting. It is also nice that the fairing sits just above the roof instead of resting on it so that the paint does not get scratched. I was worried about wind noise because of this but I am happy to say there is no added wind noise at all.
I am also glad I purchased this rack through Live More Outside. I shopped around and they had the best pricing considering I was able to get a discount code, shipping was free, and they don’t charge sales tax. Shipping was prompt and I received the rack sooner than I thought I would.
Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and I will definitely come back to Live More Outside as I continue to build my rig.
By far one of the best customer service! Nathan has been a huge help on any questions and quick to respond! Live more outside is top notch. We are getting ready to hit our first outing with our new RTT. Cant wait to test it out. We also just purchased a 270 awning. I found one on another website but wanted to keep my business with live more outside. Nathan price matched and beat their price! We will continue to keep our business with this company!
