PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The American Cowboy Field Knife – Rasp Steel with Pine Cone Handle is a handcrafted Western-style fixed blade built for ranchers, cowboys, outdoorsmen, hunters, and collectors who appreciate traditional materials and practical belt carry. With an 8-inch overall length, a 4-inch rasp steel blade, a distinctive pine cone handle, polished steel bolster, and a hand-tooled back belt leather sheath, this knife combines compact working proportions with classic American ranch character.
The photograph shows a broad polished blade with retained rasp-style crosshatch texture along the upper section. That contrast between the smooth cutting surface and textured steel gives the blade a rugged handmade identity. The dark pine cone handle continues the Western aesthetic with natural organic patterns, while the polished bolster adds a refined transition between blade and grip.
The included leather sheath is equally important to the overall design. Its orange-and-black Western floral tooling, contrasting stitching, and broad back-belt configuration create a secure, low-profile carry system that fits the knife’s cowboy styling.
Every piece is individually hand-finished by Sham Knives, so small variations in rasp texture, pine cone pattern, steel finish, and leather tooling give each knife its own character.
What Makes an American Cowboy Field Knife?
A good cowboy field knife should be compact enough for convenient belt carry while still offering enough blade length for practical ranch and outdoor tasks.
This knife measures approximately 8 inches overall, with a balanced 4-inch blade and 4-inch handle section. That proportion keeps the knife easy to manage without sacrificing useful cutting edge.
The slightly curved blade profile suits general field work, ranch chores, controlled cutting, and other appropriate outdoor uses.
Rather than relying on excessive size, the knife focuses on balance, comfortable carry, and traditional Western craftsmanship.
Rasp Steel Blade with Traditional Texture
The blade is made from rasp steel, which gives the knife one of its most recognizable visual features.
A portion of the original rasp-style crosshatch texture is retained along the upper blade, while the lower cutting section is polished smooth.
This creates a strong contrast that highlights the handmade character of the knife.
Rasp steel knives are especially popular with buyers who prefer blacksmith-inspired craftsmanship because the retained surface texture tells part of the steel’s story instead of hiding it under a completely uniform factory finish.
The 4-inch blade also keeps the knife compact enough for belt carry while offering a practical working edge.
4-Inch Blade for Ranch and Field Carry
At approximately 4 inches, the blade provides a useful balance between cutting capability and portability.
For ranchers and outdoorsmen, an oversized fixed blade can become inconvenient when moving, riding, working around equipment, or carrying additional gear. A compact four-inch blade offers a more manageable profile.
The curved cutting edge also gives the knife the classic shape associated with ranch, skinning, and cowboy field knives.
Combined with the back-belt sheath, the proportions make this design especially well suited to discreet, close-to-body carry.
Pine Cone Handle
The pine cone handle is one of the strongest visual selling points of this knife.
Natural pine cone structure creates irregular organic lines through the handle material. Dark tones, warm brown highlights, and the natural central pattern give the grip a distinctive handcrafted appearance.
Because pine cone material is naturally variable, each knife may show slightly different patterns and coloration.
That means every finished handle can have its own individual character.
The handle is secured with visible metal pins and includes a lanyard hole near the end.
Polished Steel Bolster
A polished steel bolster sits between the rasp blade and pine cone grip.
This bright metal transition gives the knife a cleaner, more refined appearance and complements the polished lower section of the blade.
Its curved shape also helps define the front of the grip while adding a premium custom-knife look.
Together, the rasp texture, steel bolster, and pine cone handle create a strong balance between ruggedness and refinement.
Hand-Tooled Back Belt Leather Sheath
The included hand-tooled back belt sheath is designed for traditional Western-style carry.
The broad leather body features detailed floral tooling, rich orange-brown panels, black edging, and contrasting stitching.
Integrated belt slots allow the sheath to sit across the back or along the belt in a close-to-body position, depending on belt placement and user preference.
This back-belt style is particularly suitable for a compact 8-inch knife because it helps keep the knife from hanging vertically or swinging while moving.
The sheath also protects the edge during appropriate transportation and storage.
Western Floral Leatherwork
The leatherwork is a major part of this product’s identity.
The photograph shows a central floral design surrounded by dark leather accents and neatly stitched borders. This traditional Western decoration complements the knife’s rasp steel and pine cone handle beautifully.
For collectors and gift buyers, the decorative sheath adds value because the complete set feels intentionally designed rather than simply pairing a knife with a generic cover.
Handmade Western Craftsmanship
The strongest appeal of this knife comes from the combination of materials:
Rasp steel blade, pine cone handle, polished steel bolster, and hand-tooled leather.
Each component contributes a different texture and visual character.
The blade provides the rugged working identity. The pine cone adds individuality. The polished bolster creates a refined transition, and the floral leather sheath delivers unmistakable cowboy styling.
This mix of rugged steelwork and decorative leather craftsmanship makes the knife especially suitable for buyers looking for a handmade Western piece rather than an ordinary mass-produced fixed blade.
Functional Field Use
This knife is designed as a functional fixed blade for appropriate ranch, field, hunting, and outdoor cutting tasks.
The compact overall length makes it easy to control, while the four-inch blade provides enough cutting surface for general utility.
Always inspect the knife and sheath before use and carry. Use the knife only for appropriate cutting tasks and follow applicable local regulations regarding ownership and carry.
Care and Maintenance
Rasp and high-carbon-type steels benefit from regular maintenance.
After use, wipe the blade clean and dry. If exposed to moisture, dirt, or acidic material, clean it promptly.
A light coat of mineral oil or suitable blade oil can help protect exposed steel during storage.
Do not store the knife wet inside the leather sheath. Leather can retain moisture, which may encourage corrosion if the blade is left damp for extended periods.
The pine cone handle should also be kept away from prolonged water exposure and excessive heat.
A Great Cowboy and Rancher Gift
The American Cowboy Field Knife makes a distinctive gift for anyone who appreciates Western culture, ranch life, outdoor craftsmanship, or handmade knives.
It is especially suited to:
Cowboys, ranchers, hunters, farmers, outdoorsmen, Western collectors, handmade knife enthusiasts, and buyers looking for a rugged gift for him.
The hand-tooled back belt sheath gives the complete set presentation quality, making it well suited to birthdays, Father’s Day, anniversaries, Christmas, or special ranch-related gifts.

I'm very pleased with this tent after having it for two years I've been in the rain I've been in the snow and it's held up pretty good but the cover that covers it did not hold up that good but the tent is perfect
Really enjoy the awning. Easy setup and got a little rain on the first trip. Easy to adjust for the run off. Very happy with the purchase!
I am one of the earliest customers Astrodome, I bought it and didn’t set it up for almost a year. By the time we set it up, we were blown away by the beauty of this space we purchased it on a mountain ledge in our glamping retreat in Lake County California two hours north of San as much as I love this space there are definitely some challenges with it in our location. It might work better than other locations, but we have had problems with the stakes, slipping and collapsing in the ground beneath and with the prevailing winds, it did stay up and it stays dry, even in tornadoes, but because the wind hits it from One Direction coming from the coast, this is definitely been a challenge for us we are going to try adding some weight inside it. The guests absolutely love this space keep in mind that with those skylights it’s going to get hot in the summertime but what’s nice is in the winter. It heats up almost passive solar. it’s also wonderful with a woodstove. A very cost effective alternative to a geodesic dome! If you want to experience it stay in ours, on Hipcamp.
I bought one of these at Scheels and absolutely love it. Great design, has everything you would ever need in a first aid/trauma/survival kit. Have one in all of my vehicles now. These guys truly thought of everything
A complete coverage of possibilities for my project and needs.
I love my new tent stove. Costumer service was also attentive and great to work with. Thank you.
The mounts work perfect with the truck bed rack I have on. Thank you for the excellent line of communication. You guys never kept me in the dark. I will ordering from you guys again.
I was wondering if you are able to sell just two extra mounts or do they just come in a set of six.
The color was even better in person. For well, looks well made and was easy to fold up and put into the carrying case. There was a bunch of colored plastic pieces from manufacturing on the mat, but I was able to vacuum it right up so be careful pulling it out.
Although it took a little extra time the delay very of my OVS Truck Topper was great. Good price too!
Fully engaged with customer, helped me get the crossbar I needed on time!
Product worked out great for my rack setup.
Order was delayed due to manufacturer delays, but my questions were answered and expectations on timing reset along the way. Cross bars were in perfect condition and work great!
I was in the market for a 3/4 length roof rack for my 4Runner as I wanted an upgrade from the OEM rails but still wanted to retain a somewhat OEM look. I am very happy that I went with the Sherpa Needle. It is a high quality rack with the best install method out of all the racks I looked at. I like that it is designed so you don’t have to deal with a mess of silicone when mounting. It is also nice that the fairing sits just above the roof instead of resting on it so that the paint does not get scratched. I was worried about wind noise because of this but I am happy to say there is no added wind noise at all.
I am also glad I purchased this rack through Live More Outside. I shopped around and they had the best pricing considering I was able to get a discount code, shipping was free, and they don’t charge sales tax. Shipping was prompt and I received the rack sooner than I thought I would.
Overall I am very pleased with this purchase and I will definitely come back to Live More Outside as I continue to build my rig.
By far one of the best customer service! Nathan has been a huge help on any questions and quick to respond! Live more outside is top notch. We are getting ready to hit our first outing with our new RTT. Cant wait to test it out. We also just purchased a 270 awning. I found one on another website but wanted to keep my business with live more outside. Nathan price matched and beat their price! We will continue to keep our business with this company!
